MOONDANCE DANCES TO DVD-A

Euphonix Makes It A Marvelous Night
As further proof that good records can only get better, Van Morrison’s Moondance is coming out on DVD-A after being given a brand new 5.1 remix by Eliot Shiner. Shiner took the analog multi-tracks and converted them to digital using Euphonix’s R-1 Digital Multi-track Recorder. Upon hearing the new version, Morrison seemed pleased and decided to go hide in a hut for several years.

Non-tech geeks can skip this paragraph: The PC-based system converts analog to 24-bit, 96 KHz digital and into the non-proprietary AES31 format. The R-1 is capable of achieving three times the resolution of a conventional CD. The digital format archives the multi-tracks, meaning that they won’t deteriorate the way magnetic tape does. Cool, now where's my eight-track of Black Oak Arkansas?

The analog multitrack recordings of the Grateful Dead’s American Beauty and Workingman’s Dead have both been transferred to the digital domain using the Euphonix R-1. Though most listeners are too stoned to notice.
