Biz heavies and top artists got fancy for the flashbulbs on CMA night, then sent us the pics so we could append our ridiculous captions. Mosey along to the award winners here. Why are Mercury boss Tyler Arnold, Post Malone and Republic’s Monte Lipman standing in this shower? A clause in Posty's contract stipulates that his beard must shampooed by senior executives at least once per fiscal quarter. Warner Music Nashville and Warner Records keep the party going as Cody Johnson celebrates his Album of the Year award for Leather. Seen brainstorming the follow-up volume, Ultrasuede, are WMN Co-Chair/Co-President Gregg Nadel, Johnson, Co-Chair/Co-President Cris Lacy and Warner Nashville artist Ashley McBryde. WMN’s Nadel and Lacy gather for this photo op with Bailey Zimmerman and Warner Records Co-Chairman/CEO Aaron Bay-Schuck and Co-Chairman/COO Tom Corson, both of whom erroneously believed they could handle the "authentic" hot chicken. They are said to be recovering in seclusion. Kemosabe/RCA's Doja Cat, in partnership with Sony Music, is commemorating the five-year anniversary of her Hot Pink album with a Fortnite activation. Beginning Friday (11/22), Doja Cat will take over "Nitewave," a music-themed island in Fortnite created by the Sony Immersive Music Studios team, blending the pop-leaning Hot Pink with the more hip-hop stylings of 2023's Scarlet. Dubbed "Doja Cat: Hot Pink vs. Scarlet," the game will find fans vying for control over the soundtrack to a Doja Cat-themed arena, with one team representing songs from Hot Pink and the other with songs from Scarlet. As an added bonus, Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of SME, has vinyl versions of Hot Pink and Scarlet available here. As for us, we prefer to remain our signature gray hue.

Coachella 2025
11/21/24
UPDATE: Lady Gaga, Green Day and Post Malone will headline the 2025 edition of Coachella. Per the poster, Travis Scott will "design the desert," which a rep has clarified to mean he'll not only "debut an entirely new era of music" but curate a Cactus Jack takeover as part of "a fully immersive and experiential world within the desert." The lineup is rounded out by Charli xcx, Missy Elliott, Megan Thee Stallion, Kraftwerk, Yeat, Benson Boone, Marías, The Original Misfits, Zedd, beabadoobee, solo sets by BLACKPINK's LISA and JENNIE, The Prodigy, FKA twigs, Mustard, Basement Jaxx, Japanese Breakfast and Portishead's Beth Gibbons. Fred again.. had previously been tipped as one of the top names on the 2025 bill, but he is absent from the poster. The 4/11-13 and 4/18-20 event at the Empire Polo Field in Indio, California, will also feature GloRilla, The Go-Go’s, Sam Fender, Jimmy Eat World, T-Pain, Shaboozey, the Circle Jerks, Ty Dolla $ign, Anitta, Darkside, Clairo, Ivan Cornejo, Above & Beyond, Gustavo Dudamel and the L.A. Philharmonic, Arca and Djo. After considerable chatter that Coachella would reveal its 2025 lineup earlier than usual this year, could the announcement of the 4/11-13 and 4/18-20 event at the Empire Polo Field in Indio, California, be happening sooner than later? The fest posted a cryptic Instagram Story this afternoon (11/19) of three palm trees swaying in the breeze, perhaps indicating that the details won't have to wait until January as they normally do. Posts like this have traditionally preceded the unveiling of the full lineup. What have promoter AEG/Goldenvoice and festival co-founder Paul Tollett been looking for that they don’t already have? Post Malone already verified his presence while announcing his own headlining tour. Is the missing piece a headliner that will truly make Coachella 2025 a must-see? Reports point to Green Day and Lady Gaga taking other top slots in the desert, but securing this caliber of talent has become more difficult in recent years. Meanwhile, artists that could have fit the proverbial bill like Oasis, Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance, Shakira and Stray Kids are all doing their own L.A.-area stadium dates those weekends. Wonderers are wondering who's still on Tollett’s shortlist. TMZ says Travis Scott will hit the main stage; the star rapper was confirmed for the 2020 edition of Coachella, which was canceled due to the pandemic, and was then scheduled to headline in 2022 before the Astroworld Festival crowd crush made that an impossibility. Across the pond this week, standard tickets for the 2025 Glastonbury Festival sold out in less than 40 minutes without benefit of any confirmed performers. Held at Worthy Farm in Somerset, England, Glasto is scheduled for 6/25-29.

During their whirlwind trip to Nashville for the CMAs (which saw a big Entertainer of the Year win for Big Loud's Morgan Wallen and killer moments for several other acts under their umbrella), Republic bro-bosses Monte and Avery Lipman stopped by Big Loud HQ. One result was this beatific pic with artist Stephen Wilson Jr. His viral cover of "Stand by Me" is making waves, and he's already generating Grammy buzz for 2026. We also want to shout out the gifted young photographer who captured this tableau; he goes by the improbable moniker S.A. England.

WMG merchandise and fan-activation division WMX will be the official merch partner for Oasis' slavishly anticipated 2025 reunion tour, which begins 7/4 in Cardiff, Wales. Beyond event souvenirs and brand collaborations, WMX will produce pop-up stores and other fan promotions, details of which have yet to be announced. The company has a pre-existing relationship with Oasis vocalist Liam Gallagher. "We understand the deep connection fans have with the band and the significance of the reunion, so we are fully committed to offering the absolute best in product and experience," says WMX U.K. SVP/GM Bob Workman. HITS will happily don a size XXL parka for the occasion. One item apparently not on the horizon is a new Oasis album, which Liam had previously claimed was "already finished." Last week he replied to a fan news account on X and declared that there's "no Oasis album in the making," confessing, "I was fucking joking. Everyone is a little uptight these days. I’m sorry if I have upset anyone, but fuck me, it was a laugh. People always want more. Let’s just get in a big stadium and go apeshit and see what happens after that."

What kind of year has it been in the music biz? Let’s start with some wild stats. Taylor Swift’s individual overall market share stands at 1.7%, with 15.6m album units YTD—more than Mercury, Big Loud and Imperial combined. That’s crazy enough, but even without Taylor, the Republic group would still be #1 in current share. Now that is dynastic dominance times two. Strangely, you won’t find the Lipman brothers’ Republic or John Janick’s Interscope Capitol Labels Group in Luminate’s market-share breakdown, despite the fact that UMG made its bicoastal realignment way back in early March. No, it makes zero sense that the market-share gods have yet to acknowledge these sweeping changes eight months after they reshaped the industry as a whole, but never fear—the post-reorg breakdown below provides a detailed look at the actual standings, as opposed to a market-share report that looks official but bears little resemblance to the world we’re now living in. In the real world, REPUBLIC Corps is the runaway leader in current share behind an insanely potent roster that boasts Morgan Wallen (in partnership with Seth England’s Big Loud), Island’s massive Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan, Mercury’s Post Malone and Noah Kahan, Boominati/Freebandz’s Metro Boomin, Drake and Ariana Grande. Along with Swift, this crew accounts for the top four albums YTD, seven of the Top 10 and 14 of the Top 20. Not only that, but Republic has become the biggest country-music marketing machine in memory, putting an exclamation mark on its awe-inspiring market share. Hot damn. ICLG, meanwhile, holds serve in overall market share this year thanks to superstars like Billie Eilish (with the #5 album YTD), Olivia Rodrigo and Kendrick Lamar (with two Top 50 LPs apiece), Eminem and the incredible exploding Gracie Abrams. Aaron Bay-Schuck and Tom Corson’s Warner is #3 in current, the product of its focus on developing and breaking new acts, as rookies Benson Boone (with the year’s #21 album) and Teddy Swims (#28) join previous breakthrough Zach Bryan and his Top 50 trifecta. Additionally, Warner’s share in country will likely further increase now that Bay-Schuck and Corson have brought Cris Lacy and Gregg Nadel’s high-scoring Nashville company into the Bunny hutch. Republic and Warner’s country shares are about the same; the primary difference between them is that Warner’s share includes the aforementioned Warner Nashville, but UMG Nashville isn’t part of Republic’s percentage. Warner sister label Atlantic appears to be on the verge of its own revitalization as Elliot Grainge brings youthful energy to the task of getting the storied company back in the thick of it following a recent slump. The fact that Atlantic has still managed a #3 ranking in overall share with a 7.7% is a testament to its deep catalog, which will provide a solid foundation for Grainge as he undertakes the label’s renovation. Charli xcx’s pop-cultural phenomenon BRAT, the fast-breaking ROSÉ and Bruno Mars, whose smashes with Lady Gaga and ROSÉ evidence his Midas touch, provide Grainge with a launching pad for his forward-facing efforts. Ron Perry’s Columbia, #5 in both metrics, has been paced by Parkwood’s Beyoncé, but Tyler, the Creator, whose CHROMAKOPIA has ruled the album chart since its release three weeks ago, has cemented his status as a cornerstone act for Big Red. With her SOS holding strong at #7 YTD, TDE’s SZA continues to deliver for RCA’s Peter Edge, #6 current and overall, while Travis Scott, Future and 21 Savage form a hip-hop triumvirate for Sylvia Rhone’s Epic, #7 in both metrics. Sony Nashville, led by the soon-to-retire Randy Goodman, Afo Verde’s Sony Latin and Todd Moscowitz’s hip-hop-centric Alamo give Rob Stringer’s parent company the 5-10 entries in the YTD current standings. Sony also has the #1 distribution company in The Orchard, whose 7.3% is the third biggest in the current sector. The overall seedings include Cindy Mabe’s UMG Nashville, Jesús López’s UMLE and Nat Pastor and JT MyersVirgin Music Group, each of which adds to the towering 38.4% haul of Sir Lucian Grainge’s league-leading UMG. It’s good to be king.

IT'S WITCHCRAFT: With Wicked poised to dominate the holidays with both gigundo box-office receipts—very possibly opening north of $100m—and big action on its Verve/Republic soundtrack, industryites are giving props to UMPG’s Evan Lamberg, who inked the 2023 pub deal with composer Stephen Schwartz (who, in addition to Wicked’s music and lyrics, has also written a brace of other Broadway and movie hits) that’s about to pay out big time. Look for two Wicked singles, “Popular” and “Defying Gravity,” featuring stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, to get a massive look—Gary Spangler’s Republic promo team is ready to rumble. Schwartz, we’re told, was at the end of his term at another pubco and was just exploring possibilities when Lamberg, a lifelong fan, sat down with him and eventually won him over. Word from screenings in multiple territories is that audiences are responding as though they’re at a stadium concert, and that the film’s upbeat, humane message will be a much-needed balm in a dark time. MERCK-CURIAL MUSINGS: Word among insiders is that Merck Mercuriadis will be making a return to the asset-acquisition game in 2025, backed by a new group of investors. Expect both catalog and artist rights (including both live and commercial use of those artists’ brands) to be among his targets. As the founder/head of Hipgnosis, the industry veteran was a hugely disruptive force in the music marketplace, supercharging the value of song catalogs and helping spark a hotly competitive cottage industry in finance-backed acquisitions. Merck exited as CEO early in 2024. His financial partner at the company, Blackstone, purchased the Hipgnosis Songs Fund (HSF)—which boasts 45k+ songs, including works by Fleetwood Mac, Journey, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Shakira, Justin Bieber and many more—for $1.6b from the fund’s shareholders in July, taking the company private after a stretch on the London Stock Exchange. Earlier this month, Hipgnosis and Blackstone raised about $1.5b in debt financing. While Merck certainly isn’t everyone’s cup of tea and ruffled more than a few feathers at the very top of the music-biz pyramid, he undeniably blazed a trail in catalog acquisition and valuation, made himself a mountain of money and bought some stellar catalogs. What will he do for his next act? Stay tuned.

Morgan Wallen took home Entertainer of the Year for the first time, Megan Moroney was anointed New Artist of the Year and Chris Stapleton snagged three trophies at the 58th Annual CMA Awards on 11/20; click the link for some astute observations on the results from our own Holly Gleason. Stapleton’s “White Horse” earned him Single and Song of the Year (the latter shared with co-writer Dan Wilson). The bearded marvel was also dubbed Male Vocalist of the Year. Female Vocalist honors went to Lainey Wilson, while Old Dominion took Vocal Group of the Year for the [checks notes] 908th time. Cody Johnson won Album of the Year for his acclaimed set Leather. Brooks & Dunn’s victory in the Vocal Duo category gave them their 19th career trophy—they are tied with Stapleton for the most wins. Musical Event went to “you look like you love me” by Ella Langley f/Riley Green. Wilson (who also won for Video of the Year) co-hosted the ceremony with Luke Bryan and Peyton Manning. The list of performers on the show is, frankly staggering, but here we go: Bryan, Eric Church, Luke Combs, Ashley McBryde, Moroney, Kacey Musgraves, Post Malone, Shaboozey, Stapleton, Wilson and Bailey Zimmerman, Kelsea Ballerini with Noah Kahan, Dierks Bentley featuring Molly Tuttle, Sierra Hull and Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, Brooks & Dunn featuring Jelly Roll, Jelly Roll featuring Keith Urban, Langley featuring Green, Malone featuring Stapleton, Thomas Rhett and Teddy Swims and Cody Johnson and surprise guest Carrie Underwood, not to mention a celebration of 2024 CMA Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award recipient George Strait, who performed with Wilson, Jamey Johnson, Miranda Lambert, Parker McCollum and Stapleton. Phew! The full telecast is streamable on Hulu; individual performances are available for viewing on YouTube. Here are a few.
Paley head shot
11/21/24
Producer, songwriter and musician Andy Paley, who was best known as one of Brian Wilson’s favorite collaborators and a close associate of Seymour Stein as an artist and executive at Sire Records, has died following a brief battle with cancer. He was 72. He passed away in hospice care in Colchester, Vermont, with family members present. Paley loomed large in behind-the-scenes studio activity for more than four decades, collaborating with a remarkably diverse array of recording talent. He worked primarily as a producer but also as a session player and composer. Among the many artists he worked with were The Ramones, Madonna, Jonathan Richman, Brenda Lee, Little Richard, Hank Ballard, Debbie Harry, NRBQ, John Wesley Harding, Elton John, The Mighty Lemon Drops, Mandy Barnett, Jerry Lee Lewis and k.d. lang. He recently provided original music for the long-running SpongeBob SquarePants, teaming with Tom Kenny, who voices the title character. Paley had been musical director for Tom Kenny & the Hi-Seas, the 16-piece rock and soul band that he and Kenny assembled. Paley was an Emmy winner and produced Brian Wilson’s track on the Grammy-winning album Folkways: A Vision Shared–A Tribute to Woody Guthrie & Leadbelly. Growing up in the Albany area of Upstate New York, Paley became fascinated by rock & roll and was writing and playing music even before his teen years. He was a drummer for local bands, then moved to Boston in the early '70s, where he formed Catfish Black. Soon renamed The Sidewinders, the band included Billy Squier and future members of The Modern Lovers, including Jerry Harrison, who would subsequently join Talking Heads. After relocating to New York, they were signed to RCA Records, with Lenny Kaye producing their lone LP. After The Sidewinders broke up, Paley played on sessions and performance dates with Elliott Murphy, Patti Smith and Jonathan Richman, whose later recordings Paley produced. Andy and his younger brother Jonathan formed The Paley Brothers, part of the mid-'70s power-pop movement. They recorded a Sire single produced by Jimmy Iovine before the label released the group’s full-length album in 1978. They joined forces with The Ramones for a cover version of Ritchie Valens’ “Come On Let’s Go” that was featured in the film Rock ’N’ Roll High School and recorded with Phil Spector. At the behest of Stein, Paley became a staff producer at Sire, where he produced and co-wrote songs for Brian Wilson’s self-titled comeback album in 1988. Wilson hailed him as “the most frighteningly talented person that I've met and the greatest musical genius I’ve come across in many years, maybe my whole life.” He produced the Dick Tracy soundtrack album and wrote most its songs, later producing the soundtracks to A Walk on the Moon, SHAG, Wild Orchid, A Rage in Harlem, Drop Dead Gorgeous and writing original music for Traveller, World’s Greatest Dad and the musical score to Showtime’s The L Word. Apart from his work on SpongeBob SquarePants, Paley had been active in numerous animation projects, including The Ren & Stimpy Show, Digimon and Camp Lazlo. At the time of his death, he was involved in production on two albums by voice actor Grey De Lisle. In an L.A. Times interview published in 1990 upon the release of the Dick Tracy soundtrack, Paley marveled, “I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would work with Brian Wilson and Darlene Love, or that Jerry Lee Lewis would one day record a song I’d written with him in mind. These are people I listened to when I was a little kid who meant more to me than anything. I dropped out of high school when I was 15 years old, after the 11th grade. I never got a diploma and maybe I didn’t pay attention in some of the classes, but I definitely paid attention to Darlene Love, and I paid attention to Brian Wilson. That’s what I really cared about. It’s amazing to me to end up later in life working with these people.” Andy (left) and Jonathan with Darlene Love Paley is survived by wife Heather Crist Paley, whom he married in 2010, and twin sons Jackson and Charlie, who were born in 2012. He also leaves sisters Sarah, Brewster and Debby.

Monica Herrera Damashek (pictured) now leads both the Artist Partnerships and Label Partnerships teams and reports to Music Partnerships and Audience head Joe Hadley (also pictured). Damashek, a 10-year veteran, has led North America Label Partnerships for the past year and now will also look after the team driving manager engagement and genre-marketing strategy as regards Pop, Hip Hop, R&B, Latin, Dance, Indie, Rock and Alternative. The aforementioned North America Label Partnerships squad is evolving to a fully regionalized structure to enhance its on-the-ground presence with labels and distributors. Team leaders are Jana Coffey (West Coast), Jesse Jacobsen (East Coast) and Tim Foisset (Nashville and Canada). This team oversees new-release marketing campaigns, recent examples of which involved Sabrina Carpenter, Gracie Abrams, Kelsea Ballerini, SEVENTEEN and more. ROBERT KYNCL - SM PROFILE PICTURE 2

Warner Music Group enjoyed a 2.8% increase in revenue to $1.63b amid its fiscal Q4 results, despite a 69% drop in net income to $48m. The company attributed the latter to high interest and exchange rates and saw subscription streaming growth for a fourth consecutive quarter, with a 9.7% uptick in revenue. Specific recorded music revenue jumped 3.6% to $1.33b thanks to gains in licensing, digital, physical, artist services and expanded rights. That helped offset a 1% decline in music publishing revenue to $295m, a figure impacted by the loss of $25m from the termination of a BMG distribution deal. Full-year revenue rose 6% at $6.4b compared to 2023, while net income of $478 million reflected a 9% increase. The company's top sellers in the quarter were Benson Boone, Zach Bryan, Teddy Swims, Dua Lipa and Charli xcx. WMG CEO Robert Kyncl said the company increased its A&R investment by approximately 11% in fiscal 2024 and "will consider bolt-on acquisitions that accelerate our progress while meeting our return thresholds." He added that the WMG board has authorized a share repurchase program of up to $100m, which "demonstrates our confidence in the value of our company and our optimism for the path ahead." "Our performance this quarter and this year demonstrated our strength and adaptability in a thriving, fast-moving market," Kyncl elaborated. "We continue to evolve WMG based on the principle that simplicity and focus drive higher intensity and global impact. This is enhancing our ability to attract original artists and songwriters at all stages of their careers, helping them realize their musical visions and grow passionate, loyal fan bases." Said WMG CFO Bryan Castellani, "These results underscore the diversity and resilience of our business. Our strong streaming performance, underpinned by positive industry trends, combined with our cost discipline, resulted in robust cash-flow generation. We are excited by the opportunities ahead and look forward to delivering more culture-shaping music in 2025 and beyond."

Lady Gaga continues to spread her “Disease” via alternate versions, the latest of which, “Disease (The Poison Live)," is out now. This take, produced by Gaga, serves as a bookend to the acoustic “Disease (The Antidote Live),” putting a more ominous spin on the track by pitting Gaga's wailing vocals against an insistent electric guitar. Check the video here. At least one version of “Disease” should appear on the diva's new album, which Interscope says will be released in February. We will consider it our Valentine from Gaga as we do not expect to receive any other. Top Dawg Entertainment will host its 11th annual "TDE Christmas" concert, toy drive and community giveback in Los Angeles' Watts neighborhood next month. The two-day event, presented 12/12-13 by Top Dawg Love the Kids, has become a holiday tradition for the residents of Nickerson Gardens, where TDE founder Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith grew up, and surrounding communities. Those hoping to see TDE artists SZA, SchoolBoy Q, Jay Rock, Doechii, Isaiah Rashad, SiR, Ab-Soul, Ray Vaughn, Zacari, Kal Banx (and surprise guests) perform on 12/12 can gain entrance by bringing unwrapped toys, new clothes/shoes or other donations. The free community giveback, 12/13, will see a toy giveaway and raffles, youth-sports programming, barbering services and a family holiday photo op. It will also host a job fair including organizations that offer employment and create re-entry pathways for ex-offenders. TDE will roll out its holiday happening at 11251 Compton Ave. Considering that more than 10,000 people flocked to last year's event, public transportation and rideshare are strongly encouraged.

Shazam has surpassed more than 100 billion song recognitions since its 2002 launch. The company helped put that in perspective by pointing out that the number is equivalent to roughly 12 songs each for the 8.2b people living on Earth. Apparently, someone would have to Shazam a song every second for 3,168 years, which sounds exhausting, to reach 100b. Nevertheless, the good folks over at Shazam couldn't be more elated to share the news. They're just disappointed we're the ones writing about it. Shazam was acquired by Apple in 2018. "This monumental milestone not only reflects how much people enjoy using Shazam but their appetite for new music,” said VP of Apple Music and Beats Oliver Schusser. "Music discovery is at the core of everything we do, and we keep innovating to make sure music lovers around the world can tap the Shazam button no matter where they hear music playing.” Shazam was launched in the U.K. as an SMS service. Back then, fans would dial 2580 and hold up their phones to get the song name and artist via text. When the App Store and Shazam’s iOS app were introduced in 2008, this still-cool (at least to us) music-recognition technology expanded to millions of users.
