A staggering number of people we know are coping with incalculable loss. The fires that have whipped across L.A. this week have taken away not merely structures but a treasury of sanctuaries and the keepsakes of many lifetimes. We want to help however we can amid so much heartbreak. But we also understand that not everyone wants the same kind of help. Some people are glad to have a GoFundMe or other campaign shared online. Others want to deal with the struggle privately. So we want to know: How can we help? Would a mention on the website be useful? Would you prefer to vent to us privately? Just want to meet for drinks and talk about something more pleasant? Whatever you'd prefer, we've got you. Just let us know—by phone, text, email, DM via IG, you name it. We're grateful and (more than usually) humbled to be part of this community.
Milly Olykan

Prior to her arrival at Live Nation, Olykan spent seven years as VP of International Relations and Development at the Country Music Association, where she also served as interim director of the annual CMA Fest. She helped establish the U.K.'s annual Country to Country festival while VP of Live Music and Major Arena Events at AEG Presents. In that role, she won the CMA Jo Walker Meador International Award for her contributions to developing the format. “It’s been a privilege to have built so many meaningful relationships worldwide, and I’m excited to continue advancing that mission from my new role at Live Nation," Olykan said.

UPDATE: I was in the midst of informing friends that we were fine when my nephew messaged me that Runyon was burning. Had I been looking out the window instead of at my phone, I wouldn't have required the notification. We'd already started our hasty packing when the evacuation warning came; by the time the order arrived we were starting up the car and heading to the bosom of my family in the Valley. Once ensconced, we parked ourselves in front of the tube and watched first responders knock down fires a stone's throw from our door, as well as others right by the stomping grounds of my youth. The reason we were spared? The direction and intensity of the wind. Had it been blowing in a different direction or gusting too hard for air support, the result might have been wildly, devastatingly different. Not only everything we own but countless homes and an array of Hollywood landmarks might've been imperiled. So much of our lives is subject to the vagaries of the wind. How fortunate we are that it pushed our sails out of danger. And how much we feel for those who have lost so much. I am obliged to note the incredible generosity and concern of so many friends, relatives, neighbors and colleagues, who offered us sanctuary and whatever else we needed. Community is our most important possession. Not even an inferno can destroy it. (previously...) The sky in Hollywood is blackening as plumes from the Palisades fire to the west and the Eaton fire to the east converge overhead and fearsome winds continue to whip and howl across the region. A phalanx of military choppers just roared overhead, perhaps connected to a federal response, but who knows? “Apocalyptic” is a common descriptor in texts and posts. Dozens of people we speak to every day have been evacuated and are in a state of dreadful uncertainty, unsure if their homes have survived the flames. Several we know have already gotten the devastating news that their houses may be gone. In times of such distress we are reminded that we are a community and we must support one another. The kindness of those who’ve checked in on us—from nearby neighborhoods and far-off states—is a balm. Nothing can salve the pain of loss experienced by so many of our friends around southern California, but we will get through this—with a redoubled awareness of our connection. As always, please stay alert, obey evacuation orders and check in if you can. It seems worth mentioning, at this dire moment, that as I monitor alerts and message with friends and colleagues, I’m playing records. Melodies are cascading from the mallets of Milt Jackson’s vibes and somehow keeping the wild gusts from overtaking my heart. I don’t know about you, but music helps me survive.
Chris Stapleton
1/9/25
Chris Stapleton, Jelly Roll and Shaboozey are all ready for some football, and they’ll prove it on 2/7 by suiting up for EA Sports’ annual Madden Bowl. A highlight of Super Bowl LIX week, the show will take over the Orpheum Theater in New Orleans, with UMG Nashville breakout artist Tucker Wetmore also onstage. Once again, the Top 25 players will face off for their share of $1m in prizes and the honor of being the 2025 Madden NFL Championship Series winner. Electronic Arts President of Music Steve Schnur waxed enthusiastic about the event and said that he and his team send love to their L.A. mishpuchah. VP of Marketing, Partnerships and Communications for EA Sports John Reseburg added, “New Orleans is one of the greatest and most passionate sports cities in the world, and with a lineup including Chris Stapleton, Jelly Roll, Shaboozey and more, this is going to be an absolutely electric night at EA Sports Presents Madden Bowl.” Super Bowl LIX will take place at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on 2/9.

It’s Thursday morning, and we’re not out of the woods yet. Devastating photos from around SoCal are coming through from Altadena, the Palisades and the PCH-Malibu area, and mandatory evacuations are still in place in critical high-burn areas. Many of our friends spared by the fires thus far remain without power or Internet access. At least 70,000 people are under evacuation orders, and more than 1,000 structures have been destroyed. Locals are mourning the losses of such institutions as Moonshadows and the Reel Inn in Malibu. The devastating Palisades fire remains uncontrolled, making its way toward the Topanga Canyon and Mandeville areas, according to Watch Duty. While the Santa Ana winds have temporarily subsided, they’re expected to increase in strength later today. Many in the music business have lost their homes as this fire becomes a historically devastating event. Road closures of Sunset Boulevard and PCH remain in place, with many residents still unable to confirm for themselves whether their homes have been lost. The oncoming awards seasons for the film and music industries are being impacted as well: Sunday’s Critics’ Circle Awards, held in Santa Monica, has been rescheduled for 1/26. The deadline for Oscar-nomination voting has been extended two days to 1/14. iHeartRadio has canceled its ALTer Ego show—which was to feature Cage the Elephant, Incubus, The Lumineers and Glass Animals—at Kia Forum on Saturday (1/11). Meanwhile, will artists, labels and the business as a whole engage in the usual events that serve as the run-up to the Grammys, scheduled for 2/2? And what about the afterparties? Tonight's Lakers game against the Charlotte Hornets at Crypto.com Arena in DTLA has been postponed. The NFL is making contingency plans to move Monday’s playoff game between the Minnesota Vikings and L.A. Rams from Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium to Glendale, Arizona, with air quality a pressing issue. Fortunately, the Sunset fire evacuation order has been lifted. But the L.A. fire chief says red-flag warnings are expected to remain in effect throughout the vicinity and Greater Los Angeles into Friday.

At midweek Quality Control/Motown’s Lil Baby had the lead over last week’s champ, SZA’s deluxe SOS (TDE/RCA), and the week's other big debut, Bad Bunny’s Debí Tirar Más Fotos—I Should Have Taken More Pictures—(Rimas). Baby’s WHAM appears on track for 120m+ first-week streams with upside, as the album’s deluxe iteration (four extra songs) landed at DSPs today (1/7). Meanwhile, Bad Bunny’s 17-track Sunday-morning drop should collect north of 100m plays in its first five days. It's a tough day in L.A. But at least we're here to distract you with our clowning.

The LAFD managed to control two blazes that broke out in the Hollywood Hills and Studio City Wednesday night, prompting residents in the hills and the adjacent San Fernando Valley to pack bags and gaze anxiously at the flames and smoke. The biggest, in the Runyon Canyon area, was dubbed the Sunset fire. The house fire on Sunswept Drive in the foothills above Studio City threatened to spread but was extinguished by an estimated 50 firefighters. According to the National Weather Service, critical fire weather will last through Friday for portions of L.A. and Ventura counties. Gusty winds and very dry conditions will continue to fuel fire starts as well as already-burning fires.

We are saddened to share the news that our friend (and friend to so many in the industry) Brett Dumler has lost his home in the Pacific Palisades fire. A GoFundMe has been set up in Dumler's name, with a goal of raising $170k. The description reads: "Brett Dumler and his son Henry lost everything they own in the Pacific Palisades Fire. He was on a work trip and came back to his home completely destroyed, all of his belongings gone including his car. Only thing that remains is what was in his carry on luggage for his trip. Not shocking to anyone that knows Brett, he has a positive attitude and would never ask for help. So we are on his behalf (sry not sry)." The good news is that the kitty is already at 56%. Please dig deep so we can hit that goal. Every little bit helps. To donate, head here.

Warner Music Italy and Warner Chappell Music Italy are dusting off their dancin’ shoes to acquire the catalog of leading Italo disco label DWA Records and its publishing arm, Extravaganza. Founded in 1989 by producers Roberto Zanetti and Francesco Bontempi, the company has amassed more than 250 masters, including a number written and recorded by its founders under such names as Savage, Robyx and Lee Marrow. Pico Cibelli, president, Warner Music Italy, and Santiago Menéndez-Pidal, president, Southern Europe, WCM, said in a joint statement, “Italo disco is the lifeblood of the Italian music scene and DWA has been at the heart of the scene for more than three decades. We’re so pleased that Roberto and Francesco have placed their faith in us as the custodians of their catalog.” Simon Robson, president, EMEA (Europe Middle East Africa), Recorded Music, WMG, added, “Our people around the world are already collaborating on exciting plans to promote this fantastic repertoire in new and innovative ways.” In the words of Kevin Gore, president, Global Catalog, Recorded Music, “We’re proud to be managing DWA’s catalog and will leverage our teams around the world to create new connections for the artists and their music to be discovered and continue to be loved.” Guy Moot and Carianne Marshall, co-chairs of WCM, concluded in unison, “We’ve made a significant investment for an amazing catalog. Our global team is now committed to leveraging opportunities to take this incredible songbook to new heights and helping ensure that a new generation of fans worldwide get to connect to this life-affirming music.” Pictured (l-r): Renato Tanchis, Raffaele Razzini, Cibelli, Zanetti, Bontempi, Menendez-Pidal, Luca Gentili and Filippo Pardini
yarrow
1/7/25
Peter Yarrow, a linchpin of the 1960s folk-rock scene as part of the pioneering trio Peter, Paul and Mary, died Tuesday (1/7) at his home in New York. The cause was bladder cancer. He was 86. Yarrow, who was born in Manhattan, began his musical life while a student at Cornell University. After his graduation, he returned home and started performing on the Greenwich Village folk scene, developing enough of a reputation to earn an invitation to play the 1960 Newport Folk Festival. In 2015, he told Rebeat magazine, “I went with the idea that I want to be involved in music that creates community. [Music] that reaches people’s hearts and mobilizes people for a more humane society.” Promoter-manager Albert Grossman teamed him with fellow singers Paul Stookey and Mary Travers, a lineup intended to echo The Weavers. Peter, Paul and Mary's debut album, issued by Warner Bros. in 1961, stayed in the Top 20 for two years and sold more than 2m copies, spawning a Top 10 hit with a cover of Pete Seeger and Lee Hays’ “If I Had a Hammer.” The group attained even greater success—and some notoriety—two years later with the Yarrow-penned “Puff the Magic Dragon,” which rose to #2 on the singles chart. Upon its release and for years afterward, pundits posited that the song was an ode to marijuana, which Yarrow consistently denied. They were closely affiliated with Bob Dylan, leading to Yarrow's being depicted in the recent semi-biopic A Complete Unknown as a peacemaker trying to calm an angry crowd after Zimmy went electric at Newport. Like many of their peers, Peter, Paul and Mary also embedded themselves in progressive politics, performing at scores of benefits for Democratic presidential candidates Eugene McCarthy and George McGovern and singing “Blowin’ in the Wind” on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial at Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. The group recorded consistently throughout the 1960s, notching its sole #1 with “Leavin’ on a Jet Plane," written by friend John Denver, in early 1970. They split shortly thereafter, though they regularly reunited to perform for a wide range of causes. In 1970, Yarrow was arrested for “taking improper liberties” with a 14-year-old girl, an offense that earned him a one-to-three-year prison sentence. He admitted guilt, served three months and was pardoned in 1981 by President Jimmy Carter. He went on to record solo projects throughout the '70s. While Yarrow continued to perform regularly with the trio until Travers’ death, in 2009, and then as a solo artist, he devoted most of his later life to activism. He supported freedom for Soviet Jewry and aiding Vietnamese victims of Agent Orange, but his primary focus was on Operation Respect, an anti-bullying group he founded in 2000 that was recognized with a Congressional resolution in 2003. Speaking to Reuters in 2008, he said, “Operation Respect has been my main and all-consuming work for the past 10 years. My perception is that the kind of bullying, humiliation that goes on in children's schools leads to high rates of depression that was virtually unknown when I was young and the high suicide rate of teenagers, which we know is almost inevitably caused by bullying or mean-spiritedness." Yarrow is survived by his wife, Marybeth, son Christopher, daughter Bethany and granddaughter Valentina.
