Taylor Swift dominates the U.K.’s Official Singles and Albums Charts today, while claiming the biggest opening sales week of 2023 so far.
1989 (Taylor’s Version) (EMI) shifted 184k sales this week, which is more than double the original 1989’s opening week of 90k in 2014. The set is the year’s fastest-seller, surpassing the 95k tally racked up by the previous title holder, Lewis Capaldi’s Broken by Desire to be Heavenly Sent (EMI).
Today, Swift has her 11th chart-topping album in Blighty. The set also tops the vinyl chart with 62k copies sold.
Over on singles, Swift has her third #1 with “Is It Over Now (Taylor’s Version)” reaching the top on 4.9m streams. Two more Swift singles are in the Top 10: “Now That We Don’t Talk (Taylor’s Version)” and “Slut! (Taylor’s Version)” are at #2 and #5, respectively.
Elsewhere on albums, OMD’s Bauhaus Staircase (100 Percent Records) is #2, while Duran Duran’s Danse Macabre (BMG) bows at #4.
James Blunt’s Who We Used to Be (Atlantic) is new at #5 and grime MC CASisDEAD is #7 with his debut, Famous Last Words (XL).

1989 (Taylor’s Version) is currently outselling the rest of the Top 40 combined at today’s midweek point. The set shifted 148k sales over the weekend, surpassing 2023’s previous fastest seller, Lewis Capaldi’s Broken by Desire to be Heavenly Sent (EMI), which sold 95k first week.
On Friday, Swift will claim her 11th U.K. Official Albums #1, extending her record as the female solo artist with the most chart-topping albums this century.
Elsewhere on albums, OMG’s Bauhaus Staircase (100 Percent Records) heading for #2, while Duran Duran’s Danse Macabre (BMG) is expected to bow at #4.
James Blunt’s Who We Used to Be (Atlantic) is #5, while grime MC CASisDEAD is #6 with his debut, Famous Last Words (XL).
Alfie Boe’s Open Arms—The Symphonic Songbook (BMG) is #7.
This week’s Top 10 would be completed by new entries courtesy of Simple Minds’ new live recording, New Gold Dream – Live from Paisley Abbey (BMG), at #8; Billy Bragg’s greatest hits compilation, The Roaring Forty 1983-2023 (Cooking Vinyl), at #9; and Gaslight Anthem’s History Books (Rich Mahogany Recordings) at #10.
The Taylor trifecta on the U.K.’s Official Singles midweeks is “Slut! (Taylor’s Version)” is #1, “Style (Taylor’s Version)" at #2 and “Is It Over Now (Taylor’s Version)” at #3. There are just 200 sales between the three tracks.
Elsewhere, “DNA (Loving You)” (Atlantic) by Billy Gillies and Hannah Laing is up two places to #11, and “Liquor & Cigarettes” (EMI) by Chase & Status, Hedex and Arrdee is up six to #14.
The Rolling Stones have their 14th U.K. Official Albums #1 as Hackney Diamonds (Polydor) outsells the rest of the Top 5 combined. Over on singles, Kenya Grace has a third week at the top.
Hackney Diamonds registered 72k sales, the third biggest week of sales for an album in 2023; it’s only behind Lewis Capaldi’s Broken by Desire to be Heavenly Sent (EMI) and Ed Sheeran’s - (Atlantic).
The Stones are among the acts with the most studio albums to reach #1 on the Official Albums Chart, joining The Beatles, Robbie Williams and Bruce Springsteen with 11 each.
blink-182’s ONE MORE TIME… (Columbia) lands at #2, while Bombay Bicycle Club’s My Big Day (AWAL) enters at #3.
Outside the Top 10, the debut from Barry Can’t Swim, When Will We Land (Ninja Tune), docks at #12.
Richard Hawley’s Now Then: The Very Best Of (BMG) is #15, and Sampha charts at #21 with his second album, Lahai (Young).

Warner Chappell Music U.K. and Transgressive Publishing have renewed their partnership following the recent re-signing of Foals and new deals with Black Country, New Road and HotWax.
The extension of the partnership, now in its 17th year, marks the JV as the longest-standing in WCM’s history.
Foals’ new deal with Transgressive is for their catalog, side projects and future recordings. Hastings trio HotWax have joined the roster after being tipped as a breakthrough act for 2023. Black Country, New Road join in the midst of a sold-out world tour following a Glastonbury performance and two Top 5 albums, one of which was a Mercury Prize nominee.
Transgressive and WCM’s JV also includes Loyle Carner, Marika Hackman and Odetta Hartman, plus catalog hits from Two Door Cinema Club, Noisettes and Mystery Jets.
WCM UK MD Shani Gonzales said of Transgressive founders/partners Tim Dellow, Toby L and Lilas Bourboulon: “They’ve got great music instincts and are always huge fun to work with. I look forward to celebrating many more successes with them.”

Will Madonna make her Glastonbury debut next year? One U.K. tabloid thinks a deal is imminent.
The Sun is reporting that Madonna is in “advanced” talks to headline the 2024 edition of the festival, which takes place from 6/26-30. In March, Glastonbury co-organizer Emily Eavis told The Guardian that 2024’s event should have two female headliners; there were none this year.
Madonna’s current The Celebration Tour ends in Mexico in April after hitting the U.K., Europe and North America.
Eavis posted a photo on Instagram after attending one of Madonna’s four shows at London’s O2 Arena,, adding fuel to the rumor fire.
