CHART STORY: STAR CONTINUES TO SHINE

Following the second week of 2019, no debuts make the HITS Top 50 Chart, but the big story continues to surround Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born Soundtrack (Interscope), which spends its 14th week climbing back up towards the Top 5. On the heels of that Golden Globe win for Best Song (“Shallow”), the set hops #10-7, tacking on another 40k and bringing the total-activity number to 2.6m.

Another noteworthy soundtrack, Republic’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, rises #5-3, moving 48k. At press time, its lead single, Post Malone & Swae Lee’s “Sunflower,” was #8 and #2 on the Pop and Rhythm radio building charts. The smash also remains #1 at iTunes and Spotify. It also tops our weekly Song Revenue Chart, thanks to a haul of $221k, and our Streaming Songs Chart with 23.9m streams.

With 57k, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie’s 12/21 release, Hoodie SZN (Atlantic), goes #1 for the first time, switching places with 2019’s premier chart-topper, 21 Savage’s i am > i was (Slaughter Gang/Epic). The latter spent two weeks at #1, before sliding to #2 with 55k.

A substantial move is made by superstar Taylor Swift, whose reputation (Big Machine) flies #40-26. That surge is driven largely by the arrival of her highly anticipated concert film, which went up on Netflix on NYE.

Speaking of NYE, how much longer must we wait ‘til the damn room stops spinning?

When it comes to marketshare, UMG is #1 with 53%, WMG follows with 30% and SME is #3 with 14%, while the indies claim 3%.

Streeting next week: Freebandz/Epic’s Future, Capitol’s Maggie Rogers and Island’s Mike Posner.
