CHART STORY: BLACK PANTHER BOWS BIG

TDE/Aftermath/Interscope’s Black Panther soundtrack has gone #1 on the Top 50 Chart with 156k, just as the movie hits theaters. Expect it to continue to sell and stream with gusto through the next week.

By the way, for the week ending 2/8, the Black Panther set had two tracks in the Streaming Songs Chart Top 5—with Kendrick Lamar f/SZA’s “All the Stars” in the lead at #3 (19.5m+ streams)—and five in the Top 10.

Another soundtrack, Republic’s Fifty Shades Freed, rounds out the Top 5 with 60k.

The only other new release to make the Top 30, meanwhile, belongs to N-Less/Interscope’s Moneybagg Yo, whose Valentine’s Day project, 2 Heartless, comes in at #29 with 14.5k. And remember: That number’s only based on two days of consumption.

Arguably, the only real noteworthy move is made by RCA Nashville/Zone 4’s Kane Brown, whose eponymous set goes #35-27 following his Kimmel performance and appearance on the cover of The Tennessean. He’s got two songs in the Country Songs Streams Chart Top 5—“What Ifs” f/Lauren Alaina (#1, 3.2m) and “Heaven” (#4, 2.6m).

When it comes to marketshare, UMG is #1 with 54%, WMG follows with 24% and SME is #3 with 20%, while the indies claim 2%.

Streeting this week are albums from Atlantic’s Nipsey Hussle and Low Country Sound/Elektra’s Brandi Carlile.

In other news, happy Chinese New Year! Now, we ring in the year of the dog, which we’ll have to kick off with some hair of the dog.
