PARSLEY, SAGE, ROSEMARY AND COLBERT

This three-minute sketch from Wednesday night’s episode of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert contains just the right blend of generational nostalgia and post-election political satire to take us into the 2017 iteration of Memorial Day weekend.

Triggering the piquant premise is guest Paul Simon’s dismissal of the beloved-by-Boomers 1966 Simon & Garfunkel hit “The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)” as out of tune with the times—whereupon Colbert initiates an update of the lyric.

Old-timers and rerun buffs will find the vibe of the bit reminiscent of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, which aired on the very same CBS network between 1967 and ’69; Simon & Garfunkel performed “The 59th Street Bridge Song” and “Cloudy” (from their LP Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme) on the 5/14/67 episode of the show.
